Gateway (2021)

Reminiscent of a shrine, a quilt forms the centerpiece of an installation that manifests a material and tactile approach to communicate with ghosts. In a new textile installation Sequoia Barnes seeks answers to her questions about the journey sculptor Edmonia Lewis and Frederick Douglass made to Naples in 1887. The exact reason and details of the trip are not documented leaving room to speculate as to what happened. Into this liminal space Barnes summons the spirits of Lewis and Douglass folding their desires into a quilt made with previously owned textiles. Gateway acts as a passage to the afterlife formed between two understandings of the underworld.
