In Senga Nengudi’s artists statement, she writes ‘I like to dance with the spaces I occupy. Partnering we show each other what we have to offer’. Today we’d like to invite each of you to Fruitmarket Gallery to participate in an event during which we will move together and apart in loose structure to feel through and with the subtle poetics of Nengudi’s work.
We have made notes with instructions to follow for 20 bodies. To make the most of the space available and to respect the safety of the artworks in the room, this will be the maximum amount of people allowed in the room at one time. Everyone else will wait here and on the stairs (forming a line for safety) until you are passed a note from someone leaving the space. Each note has on it an instruction. Some instructions are to be completed alone by the individual holding it, some ask that you find a partner and find a way to carry out the instruction together, some ask for the formation of small groups.
